Book One in the Magic Kingdom of Landover Series

Landover was a real magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement promised. But after he bought it, Ben Holiday learned that there were some details the ad had failed to talk about.

The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize the king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon layed waste the countryside, while an bad witch plotted to destroy everything.

Ben’s only followers were the incompetent Court Magician, Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe, and the lovely Willow but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor.

To put a last touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, awful lord of the demons, had challenged all potential Kings of Landover to a duel to the death a duel which no human could hope to win.

The task of showing his entitlement to be King seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn. . .

Rating: Slow start, then gets better
This book started off gradually, then got much better towards the center. If you read the Author’s biography, the slow start makes a bit more sense he was a lawyer before becoming an author.

The Kindle edition has many of scanning errors, tons of upside down exclaimation points, words crammed together, and other words torn in two.

Now that I have finished this book, I was really disappointed to see the sequel books aren’t available for the kindle, only the last book in the series, which means skipping some number of chapters. :

I read the Magic Kingdom series when they 1st came out. Thought they were really great. When I saw the 1st book in the series “Magic Kingdom for Sale Sold!” offered free of charge in the Kindle variant, I now grabbed it.

I started reading it but have found many of formatting errors that are a bit annoying. For many reason, in many cases, the exclamation point ! is put in upside down. How could that happen? Other cases are words that are hyphenated in the center of a sentence, as if the word was first at the end of a row and has been supposed to continue to the next one.

There were some other words that missed. I had to laugh when the beginning of a sentence started out “FU” and that was it.

I’ve read many books on the Kindle so far, Brooks’ 1st Shannara Trilogy and did not notice any formatting errors. I guess the whole reason for releasing this book as a freebie was caused by the poor formatting. I am at the beginning where Ben just made the buy and he’s driving to the entry point of the Kingdom and all these errors are annoying to see.

Is there a way to report the formatting problems to the publisher? I can give them examples but I do not want to use up time listing every single one, all they have to do is read the kindle variant and the mistakes just jump out at you. Clearly the Kindle variant was not proofread.

I may buy the next one in the series in Kindle format but if it holds just as many errors, I will not purchase the rest.

To summarize: Great story, lousy kindle formatting! I could give it five stars but it loses one due to formatting errors.

Rating: Fun read
What a fun, campy read. I read this book because of kindle’s free promotion of it. It turned out to be good and could be worth paying regular price for. I wish it had been a bit longer and in depth but I guess the author left it open for future installments. This is a great book to read on vacation.Enjoy!

Rating: Good but may have been much better
There are many interesting and compelling elements in Magic Kingdom, but, the uninterrupted self pity exhibited by High Lord Ben for me finally kills any positive momentum the author managed to communicate. Ben’s fixation on Annie this and Annie that plus his on occasion schizophrenic approach about fear made it hard for me to relate to him. For example of his approach about fear, he’s not scared to go running or swimming by himself in a weird, not known land after being warned of possible dangers, still in other situations he’s positively apoplectic with fear when placed in situations where it isn’t clear there’s something to be scared of. Again, parts of the story are compelling but to me they’re weighed down by the protagonist’s perpetual self pity and discrepant personality characteristics.

Rating: Great book, lots of typos in Kindle
I have owned this series for a long time. And love it. When travelling newly, I finished all the Kindle books on my iPod, so I “bought” it’s free this one. And enjoyed it. But it was obviously scanned and not edited well after. Many upside down exclamation points. Sentence sets like “.More than I. I do not think.” became “. Than 1.1 do not think.”. “I’ll” also became 1.1. The country name Lan Dover most of the time has been screwed up a bit.

It was still readable easily, but this seemed sloppy. So five stars for the book, less one for the typos.
