REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

This review is from: A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future Paperback

A Whole New Mind is written for those who need a whole new way to see the world and engage their brain. The book starts with a historical narrative outlining four big “ages”:

1. Farming Age farmers

2. Industrial Age factory workers

3. Info Age knowledge workers

4. Conceptual Age creators and empathizers

The 4th stage is where Pink concentrates on how people and businesses may be successful. Pink references three current trends pointing towards the future of business and the economy: Abundance consumers have too many choices, nothing is scarce, Asia everything that may be outsourced, is and Automation computerization, robots, technology, processes.

This brings up three crucial questions for the success of any business:

1. Can a computer do it faster?

2. Is what I am offering in demand in an age of abundance?

3. Can someone abroad do it cheaper?

When these questions are present, creativity becomes the competitive difference that can differentiate goods and you’re a commodity, too. Pink outlines six essential senses:

1. Design Moving beyond function to engage the sense.

2. Story Narrative added to merchandise and services not just argument. Best of the six senses.

3. Symphony Adding invention and big picture thinking not just detail focus.

4. Empathy Going beyond logic and engaging feeling and intuition.

5. Play Bringing humor and light heartedness to business and merchandise.

6. Meaning Immaterial feelings and values of merchandise.

Pink makes the argument that we all have to integrate more empathy and play into our lives because it enables one to relax, enjoy life more and engage the unused capacity of one’s intellect. He makes a strong argument that our society pigeon holes us into thinking some way and approaching life without the tools we really have to enjoy it and get the most out of it. The book is full of useful info and strategies also to a call to action in your life.

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 is another great book that I just finished and think you will like.
In three words? Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.,
August 4, 2009

This review is from: A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future Paperback

The central premise of this book is that people with somewhat more right brain expertise will dominate the work force in the 21st century. Or at least be more vital than the past 20 years. I bought this book because that’s a premise I agree with, so I was inquisitive to see how he demonstrated his point, or any advice he could offer.

What I got was page after page of uninformed conjecture, hyperbole, cliches, and self important blather. His premise? Left brained work dominated the industrial age, and the next “phase” of human development is what he decided to label the “conceptual age,” where right directed people will dominate.

Really? You really think that? That is a hell of a declaration. I hope you may be able to back it up with many hard data. Statistics, job growth numbers, etc? Anything?

Nope.

He claims the drivers towards the “Conceptual Age” are Abundance, Asia, and Automation. That is it. No more evidence. Let us take these one at a time:

Firstly, because of “Abundance”, people need better designs, for common household tools. Designers become vital. And seemingly this is a new idea??? He believes that the words from the new CEO of GM who said his job is to produce works of art that people drive as being somehow monumental. Oh my god! GM designs cars! They now care about “form” also as “function!”

Really??? You really think that is a new thing? So I guess then those fins on a 1956 Chevy are there for aerodynamic reasons. And the mountains of chrome were there to make it more observable at night. Seemingly the author is equally ignorant of the real drivers of the “left brained” industrial revolution in the 19th century: the production of cheap textiles for clothing. YEP! The industrial revolution existed for the benefit of fashion designers and other “right brained” people who were tired of the common abundance of the tunic. And how most of the computer revolution existed because people wanted a more “personalized” computer experience for their home or business? Ever hear of the iMac???

The author should attempt to do many research once in a while.

Secondly, because of “Asia,” many of left brian jobs computer programming, accounting, and legal are moving to Asia. Whereas right brian jobs that require artistic design, communication, empathy, play, and meaning stay right in the USA. Since these jobs are “high touch” jobs, they can not be outsourced.

Really??? You really think right brain jobs cant be outsourced? I got a graphic designer in the Philippines who says differently. I got a dozen “empathy hotlines” you may be able to call if you are feeling like killing yourself, and they will do a hell of many better talking you down from the ledge than your friends or family. I also know of many really good buyer support centers in India who are greatly trained in empathic communication. Ever hear of teleconferencing or telepresence? Right brained jobs are just as easily outsourced with the right technology.

Jobs are moving to Asia for one basic reason: SUPPLY AND DEMAND. Nothing more. Most American businesses favor American workers, simply because culture differences, currency exchange rates, and time zones are a ache to deal with. But Asian workers are so much cheaper that they’re worth the extra ache. But, these wages are only low in Asia because Asian industries aren’t large enough to demand local software developers, lawyers, and accountants. Once Asia becomes more industrialized, local businesses will be calling for up the local skill. Which decreases their supply. Which drives Asian wages up. Which makes American skill more nice to American businesses again.

This is just cyclical unemployment on a world scale: no more. Again. Many research by the author could have been nice.

Thirdly, because of “Automation,” those who just follow a defined procedure will be easily replaced by robots, computers, or Asians apparently. In other words. Technology removes low skill jobs. SHOCKER! But of course, this is not really true. As any economics professor will tell you, technology is disruptive, but it does not eliminate jobs in the long run. The simple fact is that workers who learn how to use the new technology become more productive, so more valuable to their employers! Yes, job responsibilities shift around a bit, but in general productivity increases, which creates more jobs in the medium term.

Then the author goes on to the second section of the book, which holds anecdotes about what expertise will be vital in the 21st century: design agree, story maybe, “symphony” give me a break., empathy big agreement there, play agree, and meaning agree. The stories are good reading, but they’re never supported by any hard data. There’s evidence of a fad, but no evidence of a trend.

The single saving grace of this book are the right brain exercises. They’re pretty fun ways for a left brain leaning person to step out of their comfort zone and flex the right brain a little. If you find this book in the bargain bin for $5, then its worth it just for the exercises.

Otherwise, you will most likely want to avoid it.
REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

This review is from: A Whole New Mind: Moving from the info Age to the Conceptual Age Hardcover

The title of the book is proper. For the age that we’re in, we need a whole new mind. But, the book promised a mansion, but ended up giving us an apartment. It begins like a Porsche, but ended like a VW Beetle. The author properly identified the illness of Abundance, Asia, and Automation, but prescribed the wrong medicine of six right brain directed R Directed aptitudes.

To the author’s credit, he’s the 1st that succinctly identified the big problems the Western countries are facing: Abundance, Asia, and Automation. Majority of people, as well as intellectuals and high government officials are in the coma state of not sensing the deadly effects of offshore outsourcing of high tech jobs and R&D to the basic wellbeing of U.S. And other Western countries, nor the result of automating white band jobs by the ever more powerful computer hardware and software. This is the 1st book that I know of that sounded the alarm to the great masses of the coming sea change. For this, the author ought to be congratulated.

The author has a vision that we’re moving from info Age to Conceptual Age. He said that if we have a whole new mind, we can have an economy and society that are constructed on the inventive, empathic and big picture potential. He stresses that the major characters now are the creator and the empathizer. He argues that we have to move from high tech to high idea and high touch. They are all great ideas. But, the strategies that the author prescribed through the six R Directed aptitudes, which comprise most of the book, while adequate to fight Abundance and Automation, is hardly enough to overcome Asia. There are some number of big shortcomings to the book:

First and primary, these six R Directed aptitudes aren’t the lone possessions of the Western countries. Asian countries have them, too, and can most likely master them just also. The author seemed to forget to constantly validate his assumptions against the three questions he has to answer. One of them was: Can someone abroad do it cheaper? This author has a dangerous underestimation of foreigners: “Sure. They can do low level programming and accountancy but we still create the novelty and creativity.” He didn’t notice that R&D are moving abroad to the foreign countries. For this, see businessweek.Com/magazine/content/05_12/b3925611.Htm for more detail.

Secondly, how does the author know that these six R Directed aptitudes are the most essential of all possible right brain aptitudes? He never showed research evidences for these aptitudes are indeed the most vital.

Thirdly, the six R Directed aptitudes are greatly subjective, social dependent and culture dependent. As an example, design is greatly culture dependent. What is deemed elegant and tasteful design in a culture can be offensive to another. A beautiful design to you can be an average one to me. Take another aptitude, story, as another example: the contents of stories are greatly culture dependent. A story that seems right in one culture may not seem right to another.

Fourthly, the result of developing these aptitudes, if developed to the full extent, is the more fragmentation of our world, for we have divide ourselves into smaller and smaller subjective realms. A side result is the fragmentation of the market for products and services.

Above all, the solution proposed by the author isn’t going to be able to crack the problem of “Can someone abroad do it cheaper?”

In summary, the author deserves three stars for properly identified the problems, but gave the incomplete solutions. But, I could support the author to continue to search for the solutions for Abundance, Asia, and Automation.

&nbsp,&nbsp,

This review is from: The Black Swan: The affect of the greatly Improbable Hardcover

If, as Socrates could have it, the only true knowledge is knowledge of one’s own ignorance, then Nassim Nicholas Taleb is the world’s greatest living teacher. In The Black Swan, Taleb’s second book for laypeople, he gives a full treatment to notions shortly explored in his 1st book “Fooled by Randomness.” The Black Swan is just a sequel to that book, but more focused, in depth and scholarly. This is a book of serious philosophy that reads like a stand up comedy routine. Think Larry David.

The Black Swan is most likely the strongest declaration of enlightened empiricism since Ernst Mach refused to acknowledge the existence of the atom. Of course, in hypothesis, everyone today is supposed to be an empiricist all right thinking intellectuals assert to base their views Exclusively on positive scientific observation. But not many sincerely confront the implications of rigorous empiricism. Exactly, not many confront “the problem of induction,” illustrated here by the story of the black swan.

Briefly: observing an event once doesn’t predict it’ll happen again at some point. This remains true despite of the number of observations one adds to the pile. Or, as Taleb, recapitulating David Hume, has it: the observation of a million white swans doesn’t justify the declaration “all swans are white.” there’s no way to know that someplace out there a black swan isn’t hiding, refuting the rule and nullifying our “knowledge” of swans. The problem of induction tells us that we can not really learn from our experiences. It makes knowledge problematic, if not impossible. And still, humans do behave almost without exception as though they believe that experience teaches us lessons. This is forgivable, there’s no better path to knowledge. But before proceeding, one must account for the limitations that the problem of induction places on our claims to knowledge. And humans seem, at every turn, to lack this important self awareness.

In one of the many funny anecdotes that seem to comprise this complete book, Taleb recounts how he learned his extreme doubt from his 1st boss, a French gentleman trader who insisted that he shouldn’t worry about the fluctuating values of economic indicators. Indeed, Taleb proudly declares that, to this day, he remains blissfully ignorant of supposedly crucial “indicators” like housing starts and buyer spending. This is a shocking declaration from a man whose day job is managing a hedge fund. If these “common knowledge” indicators are predictive of anything dubious see above, they’re useless to you because everyone else is already accounting for them. They’re “white swans,” or common sense. Despite of their magnitude, white swans are just irrelevant to the trader they have already been impounded into the market. In this environment, one can only profitably concern oneself with those bets which others are systematically ignoring bets on those greatly not likely, but greatly consequential events that utterly defy the regular wisdom. What Taleb ought to worry about, the Frenchman warned, wasn’t the prospect of a quarter percent rise in interest rates, but a plane hitting the World Trade Center!

Yep, the exact facts of 9 11 were really presaged by this French gentlemen, as a rogue wave that just may be lurking over the horizon. And, to the modern American mind, this is THE quintessential Black Swan. Of course, the Frenchman’s insight was just a coincidence the thing with Black Swans is that they can not be foreseen.

Taleb explains that regular social scientists use induction to gather data, which is then plotted on the good old Gaussian bellcurve. With feature silliness, Taleb dubs the land of the bellcurve “Mediocristan” and informs us that it’s the natural habitat of the white swan. He contrasts Mediocristan with “Extremistan” where chaos reigns, the wholly unexpected happens, power laws and fractal geometry apply and the bellcurve doesn’t. Taleb’s fictional/metaphorical ’stans’ share something with the ’stans’ of the real world: ill defined borders. Indeed, one can never tell if one is in the comparatively safe territory of Mediocristan or if one wandered into the lawless tribal regions of Extremistan. The bellcurve can only assist you in Mediocristan, but you dont have way of knowing if you strayed into Extremistan beyond the bellcurve’s authority. That means that bellcurves are of no dependable use, anywhere. The full implications of this take a while to sink in, and are sure to produce big controversy. In July, Taleb will debate Charles Murray author of what else? The Bell Curve. I will let you know who wins.

Taleb frames his whole argument more entertainingly than I could here, and he bolsters it with an astounding command of both cutting edge social science and the complete history of philosophy. This is an astounding work of serious philosophy, and it reads like pulp fiction. Readers who enjoyed FBR will find here the same dry wit, the same literary erudition, and deep sense of the absurd that made that book so much fun. But this is better, by an order of magnitude easily the best book I have read in five years. I smell a timely pop science bestseller here to rival Gladwell or Surowiecki, but this is a classic that will be read for decades to come.
REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

This review is from: The Black Swan: The affect of the greatly Improbable Hardcover

Starting with the good chapters 15 17, inside chapter 15 Taleb explains where the Bell curve works and where it doesn’t. The Bell curve captures well variables that do not deviate much from the mean. Otherwise, it doesn’t work. Taleb suggests we frequently fool ourselves in believing that correlation, regression coefficients, or standard deviation convey much info. This is because those coefficients are unstable and can flip sign when possible based on the time selected. This is because the fundamental variables are frequently not stationary enough for these coefficients to be stable.

Chapter 16 is excellent as an introduction to Mandelbrot’s fractal geometry as an alternative to Gaussian established investment hypothesis. He supports well that these mathematical tools do catch randomness of non stationary variables far better than the Normal distribution. But, he acknowledges that Mandelbrotian models aren’t predictive. When looking at the same data set, he and many colleagues each came up with different fundamental parameters to build fractal like models. And a small difference in such parameters makes a big difference in result. That is why you won’t hear most of fractal geometry inside the quantitative financial community. Still, this is a fascinating subject that deserves more exploration. For this function, I recommend Mandelbrot’s The Misbehavior of Markets

Within Chapter 17, Taleb more elaborates on the faults of the Normal distribution. He underlines that half of the return of the stock market over the past 50 years was related with just ten days with the greatest daily change. This is an example where stock returns have outliers of such magnitude that using the Normal distribution isn’t proper. Taleb describes the run ins he experienced with the living legends of modern finance as well as Myron Scholes and Robert Merton caused by his rejection of the Normal distribution assumption that underlies all their models.

The remainder of the book isn’t almost as good. Hundreds of pages may be summed up in just stating that we can not predict rare events. Taleb goes way overboard in attributing everything to luck. He thinks MicroSoft beat out Apple just caused by luck. Taleb doesn’t think about that MicroSoft open system allowed it to mushroom while Apple locked itself into a proprietary corner. As well, as indicated by Taleb both the rise and fall of Rome were due completely to luck. But, Rome was best at developing military approach and transportation networks. But, it sooner or later suffered from imperial overstretch. Explanations aren’t generally narrative fallacies as Taleb believes. They frequently beat out ignorance.

When it comes to advice, Taleb’s recommendation is interesting. It consists in an asset allocation of 85 risk free investments T bill and the 15 remainder into purchasing way out of the money Calls and Puts. By doing he positions his portfolio to catch the sporadic mispriced Black Swans.

This book is somewhat uneven in quality and isn’t almost as good as his 1st book: Fooled by Randomness alteration Not Available in US: The Hidden Role of Chance in the Markets and Life that became a classic on Wall Street. Otherwise, it still is an interesting reading.

If you find the subject of this book intriguing, let me propose some other books that are more rewarding. Scott Plous’sThe Psychology of Judgment and choice Making explores the faults in human judgments far more completely and obviously than Taleb in The Black Swan.’ Perry Mehrling’s Fischer Black and the Revolutionary Idea of Finance is an excellent book. Ideally, that can be who Taleb could liked to become. Fischer Black was smart and as cynical as Taleb about most of the body of economics and finance. Still, he left a great legacy of elegant models that people still use greatly as well as the famous Black Scholes choice model. Yes those models were frequently depending on Taleb’s dreaded Normal distribution. But, with minor mods those models have stayed valuable. Another recommendation is William Poundstone’s Fortune’s Formula: The Untold Story of the Scientific Betting System That Beat the Casinos and Wall Street that describes the career of a bright MIT mathematician, Ed Thorp. The latter showed how to effectively deal with doubt in gambling and investing. Taleb recognized Thorp’s distinctive specialty inside Black Swan.’

This review is from: The Black Swan: The affect of the greatly Improbable Hardcover

This is an entertaining and enlightening book, and pretty easy to read. It has an vital message about how the world works, that the world is ruled not by the predictable and the average, but by the random, the unknownable, the unpredictable big events or discoveries or strange people that have big consequences. Change comes not uniformly but in unpredictable spurts. They are the Black Swans of the title: completedly unexpected and rare events or novel ideas or technologies that have a big affect on the world. Indeed, Taleb argues that history itself is primarly driven by these Black Swans.

It is substantial argument, entertainingly presented with lots of sarcasm, and indeed, anger, by Taleb. As an example he rails against the academic community, economists including particular names, and Nobel Prize board. Significant numbers of his arguments “ring true” to me, that’s my experience in life confirms that they’re more correct than the conventional approach. Like any vital work, 90 of what is in the book isn’t original, that doesn’t make it less vital. Taleb’s share is in integrating the material together, and showing how these different ideas are tied to the Black Swan.

The themes include: winner take all phenonomen, many effects of randomness on the world, the invalidity of the Gaussian Bell Curve to many things in world, notions of scalablity, many instabilities in the world, particularly the modern world where info travels so quickly, the fallacies about people’s inability to predict the future. The importance of these ideas, Taleb’s capability to weave them together into a single hypothesis, and the capability of this hypothesis to change the way you look at the world, means the book easily deserves my highest recommendation.

However, the book does have many faults, unfortunately unfortunate because I believe they’ll take away from the credibility of the message, which is in vital one. The are many minor faults like, as an example, the inexplicable invention of a fictional author disclosed some pages later, when surely there must have been many real example that could worked better. Another example is repeated jabs about the French, these can be funny but I just do not think they have a place in work like this. There are diatribes against particular people, as well as famous economists, which, though funny, and possibly warranted, show a high level of anger by author and take away from his credibility. Frequently he also overreaches, as an example in saying the common mix of anti abortion and pro death penalty or the reverse joint views of pro abortion and anti death penatly can not be clarified logically, when in fact widely recognized theories like George Lakoff’s in Moral Politics have clarified hows these groups of views are completely consistent.

Another flaw is that Taleb looks to go a little toward the extreme of saying that we can predict nearly nothing about the future, and though he doesn’t say so clearly, this looks to imply we dont have moral responsibility to the future. This, joint with Taleb’s advice to the reader about their behavior depending on the “Black Swan” view of world just rubbed me the wrong way, for some number of reasons. One is that Taleb personally has little in common with most people, never having as far as I know had a regular career essentially what he calls non scalable, e.G. Dentist, engineer, baker he still recommends that people decide these types of careers rather than a scalable career e.G. Financial trader, author, actor which are subject to some lucky successful people and many of failures. This tell is odd 1st because Taleb is in a non scalable profession derivatives trader, then hedge fund manager indeed it appears he’s quite wealthy. More odd because he says all these types of non scalable types of work are boring and evens makes sarcastic comments the book is very sarcasm heavy as an example about dentists being able to do well by diligently drilling teeth for 30 years. The second things that bothered me is that Taleb looks be somewhat amoral to me, in this kind of book where lots of his own emotions come through, lots of his personality, he’s lots of criticism of others for their wrong models and wrong view of the world, and how this has hurt the world, but there remains a lack of moral responsibility to his advice.

Perhaps the best comparison I may make are to other vital works that don’t suffer from these faults, as an example the era of Fallibility by George Soros and Irrational Exuberance by Robert Shiller 1st and 2nd editions. But most likely Black Swan will sell better than either of these because of it is “edginess,” i.E. Aggresiveness, I personally have a distaste for this approach.

Despite my criticisms, the major ideas of the book as so vital as to merit reading and indeed great consideration.

This review is from: The 4 Hour Workweek: Escape 9 5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich Hardcover

Well,

Where to begin? I really had fun reading this book, to be honest. It’s, if nothing else, a bit inspirational and motivational. To the author’s credit he’s and I emphasized this before create a catchy title and gimick to sell you a book good for him. What is inside, though, are things that you may find better handled by other authors in other books.

In the 1st part of the book one can not help notice what a great man the author is. We notice this becasuse he tells us. We’re to believe that he’s gone through the Hero’s Journey and back again before his late 20’s. Now, dear reader, he’s distilled the fruits of his vast experience and wisdom into this little gem. Read it, and you’ll never have to work again. Just make sure to buy with the eight minute ab workout.

We get a lesson on the Pareto Principle. If you have never heard of the Pareto Priciple before otherwise called the 80/20 rule you may want to go back to junior high. BTW, Brian Tracy discussed this principle and its implications ad nauseum. The author could have us believe that he personally redicovered in many forgotton tome probably while motorcycle kung fu rock climbing in Bora Bora between kendo lessons and was just about the 1st to ever apply it to his life.

Later in the book we get many basic information all easily found in more detail in other books about starting a web business, outsourcing your workload, etc.

I can appreciate many of this as I had a web business for some number of years. This section of the book is an interesting read, but bit more. If anything, maybe it’ll inspire someone else to get started on their own enterprise. And that is perfectly good. If the author accomplishes this, then good. After all, I do not essentially think that he’s a bad man, just a shameless self promoter and some a charlatan.

Authors like Ferriss are common: someone falls a backwards into a comparatively easy existence , then decides that they’re experts and proceeds to seel their “secret” to success to everyone else which helps them get REALLY successful. But here is the deal: One hit wonders aren’t experts. When you have started four or five businesses and grown each of them to the point where they’re self enough, THEN you may be able to call yourself an expert. Striking it lucky one time in stocks, real estate throughout a bubble, or starting one business don’t constitute experience.

In the end, I think that the author does his readers some a disservice by telling them that work isn’t needed to be financially successful. I have recognized both success and failure. I have seen others go, literally, from rags to riches and on occasion back again. Over the years I guess I have given this subject many thought. My conclusion is that you won’t get there wherever “there” can be for you by working four hours per week. Vision, hard work, and tenacity are the three major “secret” ingredients for success. Just as exercise and eating right are needed to be in form. But telling people this does not sell books.

P.S. Can not help noticing how many five star reviews there are for this book from people who have only written one review. Hmmm.

This review is from: The 4 Hour Workweek, extended and Updated: extended and Updated, With Over 100 New Pages of Cutting Edge Content. Hardcover

The 1st edition of this book changed the way I handle business. I have spent far too much time focusing on trivial tasks that do not produce money or enjoyment. I got stuck into quicksand without realizing it. I have read many of books in my time, and many of them have made a profound affect, but nothing quite like this one. Timothy has a distinctive capability to show us how to get around the roadblocks we walk past every day but never really see.

This extended and updated edition adds a great deal of useful content, including:

50 or so info and case studies from real people who have read the book and doubled earning, overcame common sticking points, and reinvented themselves using the core of the original and this book as a starting point.

Real world templates for eliminating e mail, negotiating with bosses and clients, or things like to get a private chef for less than $8 a meal.

Completely modified resources that supply the new tools and tricks, high tech shortcuts, etc. For making you more economical so that you may work less.

While I’m not sure I mastered all of Mr Ferris’ action steps to automating my life, he’s opened my eyes to the have to create earning streams that do not require ME to be involved in the equation. Growing up as a Bricks and Mortar Retail brat, and now as a doctor, it’s hard for me to envision an enterprise I could create that did not rotate around me. This book, does exactly that. Its application can let you the capability to envision automating parts of your present business and life overall that can be holding you back from doing all that you want to do.

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 is another life changing book I read newly that I strongly recommend. If you are interested in self improvement and seeing things from a new perspective, it is a respectable read.

This review is from: The 4 Hour Workweek: Escape 9 5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich Hardcover

finally I enjoyed the 1st half of Timothy Ferriss’ book The 4 Hour Work Week. It challenged me to assess my perspective on the cost and availability of my own dreams. But I could not help to get the self promotion stomach pangs while I read it. Hopefully you will be able to look past that and enjoy the book for what it is: a challenge to the way we as Americans think of retirement and money.

The 1st 70 to 90 pages of the book are very engaging and well worth the price of the book. After that the book turns into a “lifestyle for dummies” book on setting up a shell company to sell someone’s merchandise. Though I find it noble that Ferriss is attempting to give people realistic steps for implementing his “New Rich” lifestyle, I also find his ideas impractical for two reasons:

His business ideas rely on tiny, niche audiences. This works well unless his book becomes a best seller and many people choose they want to do the same thing can you We purchase Ugly Houses?. anybody who figures out how to make five or ten times their money on a product that they exert little effort to produce will quickly find competition popping out of the woodwork.

His business ideas aren’t sustainable. They rely on marketing strategies and promotions that have to work forever without any change to profitability or answer rates, to maintain the “4 hour work week” lifestyle. In my experience the market is fickle and changes usually, particularly as it relates to the internet and online marketing.

I can not help but think that the complete “New Rich” idea is a branding ploy to roll out a series of self help seminars. Let us hope not. If it does, it’ll distort the message of the book, for it could require that Ferriss trade in his “New Rich” lifestyle to be back in the rat race on a quest for the millions that he claims aren’t needed to accomplish one’s dreams.

Perhaps that is the real lesson to be learned from the book: no matter where you’re, the grass generally looks greener on the other side.

&nbsp,&nbsp,

This review is from: Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High Paperback

I think the expertise taught in Crucial Conversations are pertinent to everyone who needs to communicate better, and the light hearted, engaging tone the authors use gets their points across obviously. By breaking down the tactful steps that must be taken along the way to a successful dialogue, the authors help us to develop better strategies for to get what we want.

We all face situations in life where things are tense and saying the right things is important. This is what the authors call a “crucial conversation,” as opposed to a informal discussion. Crucial conversations happen between two or more people when opinions differ, stakes are high, and emotions run strong. If you’re approaching a boss who is breaking his or her own policies, giving feedback on a colleague’s work, or talking to a team member who is not keeping obligations, keeping the conversation productive may be hard.

The major technique the authors teach is the skill of dialogue. This is the free flow of meaning between two or more people. People who use this technique are able to find a way to get all relevant info from themselves and others out in the open and make it safe for everyone to add their meaning to the shared pool. These people attempt hard to ensure that all ideas find their way into the forum, and as this “pool of shared meaning” grows, it assists people by exposing them to more correct and relevant info so they can make better decisions.

The book also offers a series of tools for understanding how we think about and prepare for problem situations. They posit that people must learn the expertise of talking, listening and acting together, and must remember that successful dialogue, “Starts with heart.” They propose you begin risky discussions with the right motives, , then stay focused no matter what happens by knowing what you want. Never lose sight of the fact that the only person you may be able to directly control is yourself. To stay focused on what you really want, pay attention to your motives whenever you find yourself moving toward silence or violence. Clarifying what you do not want will assist you find healthy alternatives to bring you to dialogue.

Since dialogue calls for a free flow of meaning, fear can kill the flow of meaning. Most of the book is focused on watching for negative emotions, like fear, that can derail a conversation. Since the book is about recognizing and navigating crucial conversations, it does not do much to assist you learn to manage your emotions and the emotions of other people to keep a conversation on track.

I just came across a new book that teaches you how to manage your emotions, also as read and manage other people’s emotions, and it is the perfect friend to CC. It is called: Emotional Intelligence 2.0

This review is from: Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High Paperback

When I acquired a copy of Crucial Conversations, I had high expectations of this book having read the authors’ remaining earlier work, The complementary Act. I must say I was not disappointed, in fact, I has been delighted! Crucial Conversations is an very insightful and practical book. Indeed, it’s a rare mix to find a book that holds profound ideas also as gives actionable tools and Crucial Conversations delivers both. The book addresses a subject that’s mainly misunderstood and very underestimated: high stakes dialogue. The authors define crucial conversations as those where 1 stakes are high, 2 opinions differ, and 3 emotions run strong, or in other words, most of both our professional and personal lives. We are all involved in crucial conversations at home and at work but most of us aren’t aware of the interpersonal dynamics at play or we are unskilled in how to react differently. The book helps the reader 1st understand the rules involved in &quot, crucial conversations&quot, but then also helps the reader develop real expertise and abilities to decide or change their communication patterns. The result is extraordinary. The book’s affect is a much larger idea than simple communication it’s all about efficient human interaction and to get results with and through people. The book is greatly readable, very engaging and really quite fun. It’s filled with illustrations and stories from all walks of life: business examples, personal examples and family examples. The fact that the rules and expertise the authors teach may be applied in all dimensions of life work, home, personal is appealing to me and made the book very useful on many fronts.I profited most from this book from a business standpoint and have found that applying these expertise has made a real difference at work. I am more courageous and more thoughtful simultaneously. I understand people better but I particularly understand myself better. I am far more conscious and aware of my dialogue with others and I have largely improved my expertise and abilities to lead effectively. The bottom line is, I am helping my company get better results and I am far more efficient personally. If more people in business were to apply these rules and expertise in the recurrent crucial conversations they have at work, they could make better decisions, accomplish better results and do it all in a way that could build the trust and strengthen relationships. I could not give a book higher marks. Outstanding!

PAY THE money this book costs and avoid costly proceedings, improve your communication, better manage expectations, defuse pent up emotions, and let your company be more productive!I just finished Crucial Conversations and the 1st thing that I did as I laid down the book, was to log on to and order 30 copies to give to the managers inside my company. I’m the owner of my company of 600 employees and I’m constantly searching for improved ways to enhance communication among our staff and employees. I’m going to be sure that my HR team will include these rules into their training. As I read through this book, I found that so many of our issues inside the company could have been eliminated or diminished if we had embraced and utilized the tools laid out inside this book. I may have evaded a costly lawsuit if these rules had been utilized when we disciplined and sooner or later terminating an unproductive employee. The authors have mixed the humor of Dilbert, with the vision of Stephen Covey, with the practicality of consultants who have been down in the trenches of many of the biggest corporations in the US. It’s an easy and enjoyable read.I also found as I read the book that I kept thinking about how to use these tools to enhance the conversations in my personal life, with my wife and with my kids. I could like to see a second book that focused on Crucial Conversations at Home.
REAL NAME
&nbsp,&nbsp,

This review is from: Good to Great: Why many businesses Make the Leap. And Others do not Hardcover

Jim Collins, co author of Built To Last, has done it again! This time he spent five years trying to learn what differentiates good businesses from great businesses. This study may be applied to entrepreneurial adventures and to current corporate America. After reading this book you may see your company from a much different perspective than in the past and it may have you thinking about the usefulness of senior managers inside your company. I believe it’s a book that business executives will read and keep useful for reference. This book is a study of businesses that surpass their business, the in general stock market and produce PHENOMENAL returns over a 15 year period 15 of them are “normal” years and the next 15 years are full of explosive growth. Many key points you’ll take away from this book include:1	Growth in most businesses came after years and years of trying to adapt / mold a idea into something the company really believed in. Once this happened the growth engine got going.
2	Great managers worry more about to get the right people on board and the wrong people off board BEFORE they establish a corporate stategy.
3	Most great CEOs came from inside their own ranks and were not recruited from the outside.
4	Executive reimbursement did not seem to be a key driver of corporate performance
5	The respective great businesses exceeded the in general stock market in creating shareholder value by at least 3x throughout their 15 year run calculated some for many more years. While many may say this isn’t much think about the steel business and how many are filing for bankruptcy. Nucor Steel still managed to defeat the S&amp,P by more than 3x.
6	The great businesses in this book blew away their comparable peer group. Wells Fargo and Bank of America, Kroger and other grocery chains, Walgreens and Eckerd, etc.
7	Collins describes a Level five leader. After reading this section I has been amazed at how many CEOs I recognized as not being Level five leaders. This may, soon, shake up executive reimbursement plans, CEO searches and possibly influence corporate administration.
8	Technology accelerated a shift but has been regarded as a tool. It did not define the company.
9	M&amp,A activity played virtually no role in going from good to great. That is all I’ll write about the book. I could write on and on about how good this book is. Read it. It’ll change the way you think about business. Other good books on the rules of business and entrepreneurship are Leading at the Speed of Growth by Catlin and Mathews and The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing by Jack Trout and Al Ries.
Good to Great + consistent best Thinking = Best,
April 20, 2004

        By A Customer

This review is from: Good to Great: Why many businesses Make the Leap. And Others do not Hardcover

This book is a fascinating read! A study taken over five years began with twenty eight corporations and revealed eleven that had made the leap from Good to Great. From this study, I gained an instant understanding of the role of humility in management. The main ambition of great leaders is focused on the success of their company, not on themselves. Collins advocates the Hedgehog idea a mix of discovering what you may be best in the world at Optimal Thinking, what you’re passionate about, and what drives your economic engine. Collins states that sustained disciplined action is mainly achieved by &quot, fanatical adherence to the Hedgehog idea and the willingness to shun opportunities that fall outside the three circles.&quot, So my question is: How do you recognize the best? I recommend best Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self by Dr. Rosalene Glickman as an adjunct to this powerful book to offer the mental resource to recognize the best, optimize emotional and financial intelligence and create a corporate culture of optimization. From Good to Greatest to Best!&quot,
TOP ten REVIEWER
&nbsp,&nbsp,

&nbsp,&nbsp,

This review is from: Good to Great: Why many businesses Make the Leap. And Others do not Hardcover

This study has been stimulated by Mr. Bill Meehan’s head of McKinsey in San Francisco observation that Built to Last was not useful to businesses, because the companies studied had generally been great. Most businesses have been good, and never great. What should these companies do? Jim Collins and his team have done an huge total of interesting work to find out if a good company may be come a great company, and how. The answer to the former question is “yes,” presuming that the eleven of 1435 Fortune 500 businesses didn’t make it there by accident. The answer to the latter is less clear. The study group identified some characteristics that their eleven businesses had in common, which were less usually present in comparison businesses. But, the study inexplicably fails to look at these same characteristics to see how frequently they succeed in the general population of businesses. If these characteristics work 100 of the time, you really have something. If they work five of the time, then not too much is proven. How were the eleven study businesses selected? The requirements take pages to explain in an appendix. Let me change by saying that their stock price growth had to be in a vary from somewhat lower than to not much higher than the market averages for 15 years. Then, in the next 15 years the stocks had to soar versus the market averages and comparison businesses while left over independent. That is hard to do. The selected businesses are Abbott Laboratories, Circuit City, Fannie Mae, Gillette, Kimberly Clark, Kroger, Nucor, Philip Morris, Pitney Bowes, Walgreen, and Wells Fargo. As to the “how,” attention has been focused on what happened before and throughout the transition from average performance to high performance. Interviews, quantitative analyses, and business press reports were studied. Obviously, there is a tendency to see things a bit with 20 20 hindsight in such a situation. Because this study started in 1996, it dealed with facts that were already quite old while they beed examined. Bias is probably. The key conclusions as to “how” included the following:1 a series of CEOs promoted from within who joint “personal humility and professional will” focused on making a great company,2 an initial concentrate on eliminating weak people, adding best ones, and establishing a culture of top skill putting out surprising effort,3 then changing attention to staring at and thinking unceasingly about the hardest facts about the company’s situation,4 using facts to develop a simple idea that’s iteratively reconsidered to concentrate action on improving performance,5 establishing and maintaining a corporate culture of discipline built around obligations, with freedom about how to meet those promises,6 using technology to speed up progress when it fits the company’s idea of what it wants to become, and7 the company builds momentum from consistent efforts behind its idea that are strengthened by success. Then, a connection is made to how these seven conditions can supply the foundation for establishing a Built to Last kind of company that can outperform the competition over many decades. One possible criticism of the study is that its conclusions may be dated. Former Stanford professor Collins argues that he’s uncovered basic facts about human organizations that will be unchanging.I compared the conclusions in this book with my own studies of best CEOs and businesses in the 1988 2001 time period. I noticed two big differences that propose a shift in “best practice” standards. 1st, those who outperform now developed processes that create big enhancements in their operating business models every 2 5 years. Second, senior management development is focused around improving a culture for defining and implementing such enhancements. I suspect that item 4 above was an embryonic predecessor to these new dimensions, which happen more usually now than in this study. Next, I compared the list of seven things to what I had observed in businesses. The biggest point that hit me is how not many CEOs have been interested in creating long term outperformance that lasts past their own tenure in an business. You also must be a CEO for a long time with that concentrate before you have a chance to make a lasting affect. Founders have a special advantage here. Perpetuating outperformance may help fill a mental need for immortality that fits with founders particularly well. , I thought about what I knew about the businesses studied from personal contacts throughout the study years. My sense is that their stories are far more complex than is captured here. I think the data have most likely been “scrunched” to fit together in many cases. In specific, I wonder if these businesses will largely outperform in the next 15 years. In many cases, they extended to meet an unfilled need that’s now mainly fulfilled. Can they develop a new idea for 4 that will carry them forward as effectively in the future? My guess is that majority won’t. If that turns out to be the case, we must complete that the things on this list can be needed . . . But may not be enough to go permanently from good to great. Time will tell. Before closing, let me watch that if the research team had also looked at the rate by which their rules succeeded among businesses that employed them, this could have been one of the finest research studies on best practices that I have seen. A book like this will provoke much discussion and thought for many years to come. Possibly that info may be included in a future edition or printing. Then, we’ll have something magnificent to consider!Do you want to be the best permanently? Why? Or, why not? Mr. Collins points out that it most likely takes no more effort, but many more discipline and concentrate.

For a book that bills itself as something that will “offer insights into what we know, and do not know, about what the future holds for the imperiled industry”, it does an excellent job with the 1st part, hard to say what was distinctive about the take of the author that was considerably different from other books like What could Google Do?And The Google Story: Inside the Hottest Business, Media, and Technology Success of Our Timeand hardly does justice to the last part what future holds. The story of the beginnings and rise of Google, its famed work culture, unconventional approaches of its founder are all well told in this book also as last ones. Auletta tries to cast the discussion from the viewpoint of the marketing business and while that in itself does not supply a considerably different perspective Anyone who understands Google’s profit streams already knows it’s in the marketing business.., it does supply for interesting reading. For an begin in the Google story, this book will do full justice. If you’re already familiar with the Google story and thought that the author will concentrate on the future of marketing media and related subjects, you’re probably to be disappointed. A recent book The Curse of the Mogul: what is Wrong with the World’s Leading Media businesses really does more justice in that regard.

Auletta does reraise important issues the discussion on Google Books and copyrights is a clear standout in the book. The “hubris” as portrayed by conventional media businesses throughout Google’s infancy is mind boggling and funny of course, with the benefit of hindsight. Other than the framing of the discussion in the viewpoint of media/advertising, a Google buff isn’t probably to realize important gain from this book. That concentrate also forces the author not to be able to discuss merchandise like Google Health which has the possible for being a disruptive solution in itself. In general, an excellent read for the Google newbie, but an OK addition for a Google phile.

“Googled” by Ken Auletta chronicles the rise of Google from its auspicious origin inside the labs of Stanford University to its becoming possibly the most powerful technology company in Silicon Valley today. Mr. Auletta, who covered the media and technology industries for many years, has drawn on his many dozens of personal interviews with key players to tell this extraordinary story as only he can. Full of interesting anecdotes, insight and analysis, this greatly readable book explains why Google matters many to buyers, businesses and policy makers.

Mr. Auletta excels at writing Google’s corporate history, dedicating individual chapters to yearly of its development from 1999 through 2008. Like many Internet success stories, we become acquainted with Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two more or less socially awkward but undeniably smart persons who have stayed true to their vision of making info available to end users via the Internet. Mr. Auletta explains that Google’s concentrate on perfecting its proprietary search algorithms has proven to be widely disruptive to technology and media businesses alike, while its control of info garnered attention from governments and non governmental organizations who are worried about issues of corporate power and personal privacy.

Mr. Auletta discusses how Google’s growth posed challenges inside to its management, corporate culture and approach. While usually praising Page and Brin for their decisions, Mr. Auletta is worried that Google’s founders, who have still to be confronted with the kind of difficulty that afflicts most business holders, may be overlooking many of the external threats to the company’s long term viability, chief among they are what Mr. Auletta believes are rightful public concerns about the use of private info for profit. Still, it’s clear from the author’s thoughtful analysis that the technology and data Google collects has uniquely located the company to continue to take benefit of, if not define, the media/technology landscape for the foreseeable future.

I greatly recommend this book to everyone.
Customer review from the Vine&#8482, Program What’s this?

When I saw the title of this book, I thought that it could tell me about all the great new projects Google is working on, and how they’ll change how we do everything. But the most of the book is retrospective, telling us how Google got to where it’s now. It’s a well written corporate history, with many of detail and insider views. It describes how Google came to be the dominant player in the online marketing market with AdWords. It describes how Google News is hastening the extinction of most of America’s newspapers. It talks about Android, Google’s alternative OS to the iPhone. It covers the thrilling but mismanaged Google Books project. But when it comes to reporting Google’s new plans, like the Google Chrome OS, or the new thrilling and somewhat scary developments in the Google Maps/Google Earth platform, the book falls woefully short.

Perhaps the author couldn’t expand on what thrilling new plans Google has is because all the really thrilling news recently was from other businesses. The most life changing merchandise to hit the market recently have been Facebook and Twitter, neither of which are Google merchandise. It’s also worth noting that while search will never go away, Twitter, and to a lesser extent Facebook, have gone a long way to changing the way we access data. Instead of simply searching for things, people can now share links quickly and easily with their network of friends. Android has still to make a important dent on the iPhone’s market share. Possibly if Google made a more concerted push to support and develop Augmented Reality technology for Android phones, because AR surely looks to be where the next wave will come from, and their are no dominant players in that field still.

In the end, I has been misled by the subtitle of the book, “The End of the World as We Know It,” into hoping it offered a view of the future. Given the fact that I read the book in paper format, I should have recognized that this was a long shot. Our view of the future is constantly changing, and it’s an unrealistic expectation to hope that a book author can make predictions that will a stand up to the delay between idea formulation and publication and b avoid being leaked and widely circulated on the web previous to publication.
&nbsp,&nbsp,

This review is from: The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World Hardcover

Niall Ferguson has written an easily available and entertaining history of finance, ranging from the clay tokens of Mesopotamia 5,000 years ago to the hedge money of today. The title of this book has seemingly been modelled on Jacob Bronowski’s “The Ascent of Man,” and like that book it’ll be made into a TV series. Being a TV celebrity isn’t something that wins the admiration of one’s peers in the history profession, to say the least. But those little rebukes are comparatively light in comparison to the scorn he received for his political views in Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for world Power and Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire. In those works he argued that empire was useful not only to the mother country but the dominated countries also. In this work he chronicles not only the history of money but also makes a case for liberalized finance.

Ferguson examines the financial subplot behind many of the big historical powers like the role of money in ancient Mesopotamia, the denarius in Roman society, and gold and silver in the civilization of the Incas. He’s good in his descriptions of financial families like the Medicis and the Rothchilds, and how they became banking dynasties. Another memorable episode was the rise of Amsterdam as the world’s financial center and the center’s successive shift to London.

History is filled with financial disasters of which we’re well aware today. Ferguson tells the story of John Law and how he became France’s head of finance. He engineered a financial bubble that took them some number of generations to overcome. Making matters worse, it occurred simultaneously as the British South Sea Bubble.

Also instructive is the history of the 1st great globalization 1870 1914. For this period also read Jeffrey Frieden’s world Capitalism: Its Fall and Rise in the Twentieth Century. The world had become so inexpensively interdependent that the pundits believed the possibility of war between great powers had been eliminated. This sentiment was famously expressed in “The Great Illusion” by Norman Angell.

Although this book was written before the current economic crisis, the last chapter is prescient. “From Empire to Chimerica” tells of the symbiotic relationship between China and America. The joint country “accounts for just over a tenth of the world’s land surface, a quarter of its population, and a 3rd of its economic output, and more than half of the world economic growth of the last eight years”. This relationship, in which China saves and America spends, and in which China’s savings can be used to enable America to use up more, is obviously unsustainable. Ferguson sees this savings glut as the cause of the current subprime crisis. That, in my humble opinion, was one of the causes, there were many bad actors involved in this catastrophe, citizen borrowers included.

Although it isn’t evident to everyone in the midst of a crisis, Ferguson properly points out that financial engineering is one of the great forces behind human progress. The history of finance is a procedure of creative destruction. Financial risk taking is needed for economic expansion and human development, and Ferguson does a great job in making the case. Too bad it reads like a script made for the History Channel.

mad about the bankers going bust? Ferguson starts from this premise to educate the reader into the history behind how international finance got to its current position. Beginning with loan tablets in ancient Mesopotamia, Ferguson traces the origin of government lending, the stock market, the bond market, the mysteries of quants, and a fascinating last chapter on how China and America have up to now been in a symbiotic relationsip with Chinese products financial support American avarice, but this may not be for much longer.

Ferguson’s books have been to get bigger and more ambitious the more famous as he became. With this comes a needed total of reductive argument, lurching from Glasgow loan sharks, to Potosi silver mines, to the reckless Scotsman John Law who set up a French state bank in the 18th Century which ended up ruining its investors. This is most likely because, like all Ferguson’s recent books, it’s a TV tie in.

Ferguson is much in favour of globalisation and international finance. He plugs the book in the introduction as a teaching tool for those who are sceptical or shaky of the systems that drive money around the globe. Wise up, or be a loser is his essential message. This book has been finished just before the great bank collapse, and consequently does not have much to say on the current crisis.

This kind of chest thumping history is obviously lucrative for Ferguson, but after his smart early books on the Rothschilds and the 1st World War, one can not help thinking with his mid career media don posing, he’s acted a bit like the hedge fund managers like Ken Griffin he idolises in this book who gained great money at the expense of something more hard, decent and lasting.

When I was given this book, my heart leapt because I know Niall Ferguson is a robustly contrarian, sharp, articulate and informed historian, but it sank now that I saw that the book, like many of his recent works, was again depending on a TV series. Ferguson is a man of real talent, it’s a shame he chosen to prostitute that skill. No doubt “The Ascent of Money” made for a TV show of far more than average quality, but the book is essentially scrappy and somewhat shallow. It looks to evolve as indicated by the picturesqueness of some places the televisual imperative, rather than the logic of the argument. I could like to see the TV link flagged more prominently on the cover so one is made aware in advance that this isn’t a serious work of history, but a potboiler intended to increase money so that Ferguson can increase his earning power to the levels of equally or less brainy college contemporaries who went into finance or the law. Truthfully, I has been disappointed. I hope Ferguson will get back to being a correct historian soon.

Magic Kingdom for Sale Sold Landover review:
Book One in the Magic Kingdom of Landover Series

Landover was a real magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement promised. But after he bought it, Ben Holiday learned that there were some details the ad had failed to talk about.

The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize the king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon layed waste the countryside, while an bad witch plotted to destroy everything.

Ben’s only followers were the incompetent Court Magician, Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe, and the lovely Willow but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor.

To put a last touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, awful lord of the demons, had challenged all potential Kings of Landover to a duel to the death a duel which no human could hope to win.

The task of showing his entitlement to be King seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn. . .

Magic Kingdom for Sale Sold Landover reviews:
Rating: Slow start, then gets better
This book started off gradually, then got much better towards the center. If you read the Author’s biography, the slow start makes a bit more sense he was a lawyer before becoming an author.

The Kindle edition has many of scanning errors, tons of upside down exclaimation points, words crammed together, and other words torn in two.

Now that I have finished this book, I was really disappointed to see the sequel books aren’t available for the kindle, only the last book in the series, which means skipping some number of chapters. :

Rating: Great book lots of formatting errors in Kindle edition
I read the Magic Kingdom series when they 1st came out. Thought they were really great. When I saw the 1st book in the series “Magic Kingdom for Sale Sold!” offered free of charge in the Kindle variant, I now grabbed it.

I started reading it but have found many of formatting errors that are a bit annoying. For many reason, in many cases, the exclamation point ! is put in upside down. How could that happen? Other cases are words that are hyphenated in the center of a sentence, as if the word was first at the end of a row and has been supposed to continue to the next one.

There were some other words that missed. I had to laugh when the beginning of a sentence started out “FU” and that was it.

I’ve read many books on the Kindle so far, Brooks’ 1st Shannara Trilogy and did not notice any formatting errors. I guess the whole reason for releasing this book as a freebie was caused by the poor formatting. I am at the beginning where Ben just made the buy and he’s driving to the entry point of the Kingdom and all these errors are annoying to see.

Is there a way to report the formatting problems to the publisher? I can give them examples but I do not want to use up time listing every single one, all they have to do is read the kindle variant and the mistakes just jump out at you. Clearly the Kindle variant was not proofread.

I may buy the next one in the series in Kindle format but if it holds just as many errors, I will not purchase the rest.

To summarize: Great story, lousy kindle formatting! I could give it five stars but it loses one due to formatting errors.

Rating: Fun read
What a fun, campy read. I read this book because of kindle’s free promotion of it. It turned out to be good and could be worth paying regular price for. I wish it had been a bit longer and in depth but I guess the author left it open for future installments. This is a great book to read on vacation.Enjoy!

Rating: Good but may have been much better
There are many interesting and compelling elements in Magic Kingdom, but, the uninterrupted self pity exhibited by High Lord Ben for me finally kills any positive momentum the author managed to communicate. Ben’s fixation on Annie this and Annie that plus his on occasion schizophrenic approach about fear made it hard for me to relate to him. For example of his approach about fear, he’s not scared to go running or swimming by himself in a weird, not known land after being warned of possible dangers, still in other situations he’s positively apoplectic with fear when placed in situations where it isn’t clear there’s something to be scared of. Again, parts of the story are compelling but to me they’re weighed down by the protagonist’s perpetual self pity and discrepant personality characteristics.

Rating: Great book, lots of typos in Kindle
I have owned this series for a long time. And love it. When travelling newly, I finished all the Kindle books on my iPod, so I “bought” it’s free this one. And enjoyed it. But it was obviously scanned and not edited well after. Many upside down exclamation points. Sentence sets like “.More than I. I do not think.” became “. Than 1.1 do not think.”. “I’ll” also became 1.1. The country name Lan Dover most of the time has been screwed up a bit.

It was still readable easily, but this seemed sloppy. So five stars for the book, less one for the typos.
